For the past three years I have been researching the history of jazz suites for my thesis at Rutgers-Newark's Jazz History & Research Program. Under the guidance of Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr. Henry Martin I have generated an enormous discography and writings about jazz long form compositions. To gain insight on a few of my favorite suites: Mary Lou Williams's "Zodiac Suite" & Bill Barron's "Modern Windows Suite" I decided to do an independent study where I created arrangements for my group Truth & Consequence and perform them.

10.24.12Jazz Matinee & Masterclass Series
In Spring 2012, I was awarded a Community Partners Grant from the American Composers Forum, Philadelphia Chapter, in collaboration with the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts to provide 3 "Jazz Matinee & Masterclasses". These FREE workshops will feature 4 guests: Odean Pope, John Swana, Tom Lawton & Bobby Zankel performing and being interviewed by local DJs: J. Michael Harrison, Zivit Schlank & Dan Buskirk about Jazz music using borrowed song forms for new compositions. Each workshop will feature a discussion topic: The Blues, AABA Song form and Riff or Pattern based songs as a theme These song forms were used in compositions for "The Lore & Lineage Suite" (debut performance April, 2013) which will also feature the guests as soloists in the suite.
Each Spring, the Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, for the last 4 years, has invited a composer to work with us, culminating in a concert of the music created. This Spring the inspiring Muhal Richard Abrams has created "Soundpath" which will be performed at Montgomery County Community College on April 28th, 2012, 8pm.
Here are links to MCCC's Lively Arts Series, Muhal's site, Bobby's website which includes interesting info and interviews about the concert and Muhal and my own site hope to see you!
I took a short hiatus for the holiday season, had no major events to report and enjoyed some nice off time. However, in February a few important things are happening.
Primarily, 2 events at Tritone are occurring before it closes and changes hands.
This Thursday, February 2nd, after a DECADE of monthly concerts Bobby Zankel's Warriors of The Wonderful Sound will complete its residency (& play tribute to the great Sam Rivers). We will of course continue (in April, w/ Muhal Richard Abrams!! @ MCCC) but for me this is a wistful end to a rare & long running residency.
Wed, Feb. 15th & 16th will be a 2 night avant garde blow out filling up the last Avant Ascension & Puzzlebox performances. Over the 2 nights- Truth Nektar a hybrid of Larry Toft & my respective bands, Interplay (Elliott Levin), Puzzlebox, Shot X Shot, Tim Motzer, Upholstery, Bobby Zankel (small group) and others. We hope you can join us for these celebrations.

Also Feb. 21st, my student sax 4tet will have an open studio concert, 6:15, @ the West Philadelphia Settlement branch, FREE & Awesome
& on another teaching note,
we are launching a Thursday Jazz Program at the MLC branch of Settlement starting on Feb. 23rd (w/ auditions & workshops leading up to the class on the previous 2 Thursdays)
A little history- a little over a decade ago, in collaboration w/ Marc Christman of Ars Nova Workshop, Tritone was chosen for the second year of the Collective Voices Festival. We had an excellent event featuring Odean, Bobby, Jamaaladean, Jemeel Moondoc, Billy Harper, Jaleel Shaw - the 1st Warriors Concert. Afterwards many of the bands picked up monthly shows and for some reason my phone number was listed in the paper- people would call me and I would actually know what was happening there, so for a few months I was the Tritone information hotline. Over time, and currently if you order from Dave, you could order a "Dan Peterson" a pint sized Gin & Tonic w/ no straw! All in all I estimate I've performed there 250+ times and watched many a wonderful concert, I have great recollections of James Blood Ulmer, opening for Dave Douglas's Witness, Sax Choir & Aerial Photograph concerts and plenty of memories from Avant Ascension. Tritone was a place that gave the non-traditional a venue, and we need another one to fill the space it leaves behind!

Recommend your favorite music student to try out for an audition and get involved! This is at the West Philadelphia branch (don't worry, I'm trying to assimilate the rest of the 6 branches as well). Its a lot of fun, great kids and we welcome beginners!

07.25.11Special August Show, Zankel Plays T & C
After the completion of my year long, Grant funded, Metamorphosis project a little July break was needed. Getting back to work in August I have a very special project planned for August 4th, featuring the PEW fellow & incredible alto saxophonist Bobby Zankel. Last year I received a Subito Grant from The American Composers Forum,
It assisted in putting forth a year long concerts series, of monthly events, for my group Truth & Consequence. Over the last year, Truth & Consequence has performed from small group to octet sized, performing 20 new compositions, created a live CD "October" performed with a live audience at Buckeye Recording Studios in South Philadelphia, appeared in audience friendly events in Cian Frani Park, Lucky Old Souls and The Rotunda, as well as my first appearance as a leader at Chris's Jazz Cafe and the developing of a group that has grown in its versatility and has developed a sound.
"Peterson will summon a wealth of textural subtlety, rhythmic juice, bluesy bite and formal adventurism"PW, D.Adler
A special thanks goes at to the many musicians who have been involved, the many generous contributors and audience members who have attended and made the events successful and The American Composers Forum for being an incredible facilitator.

Daniel Peterson’s Truth & Consequence Octet Saxophonist/multireedist Daniel Peterson, a 2004 Temple graduate, co-curates the monthly Avant Ascension series at Tritone, and he’s honed his voice in a number of the city’s finer ensembles: Bobby Zankel’s Warriors, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir and more. His own recordings include the evocative suite Five Simple Worlds … And Ways of Getting There and now the audience-funded October, a live-in-studio document featuring his Truth & Consequence Octet. Heralding the new release this week, Peterson will summon a wealth of textural subtlety, rhythmic juice, bluesy bite and formal adventurism with vibraphonist Behn Gillece, violinist June Bender, trombonist Larry Toft, guitarist Mike Lorenz, bassist Matt Stein and drummer Wayne Smith. -David R. We will celebrate October 16th @ 6pm & 8pm and the 17th @ 11am & 1pm, all at the Buckeye studio in South Philadelphia (note- address will be distributed only to attending guests).
The Octet will perform all of the new music we have been performing for the last 6 months and the audience will receive a finished CD of the work listing them as co-producers. Additionally through Kickstarter we have awarded 20 music students and parents tickets to the shows.
Come Celebrate With US! by contacting me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hi, I hope you are all squeezing out your last bits of Summer. Please, check out the Kickstarter for my October concerts. The Kickstarter is a webpage, which acts like a PBS fundraiser for your specific project, I have set a goal of $1000 (of which a quarter has been pledged, thanks guys!) in pledges by September 25th. The only downside is if my goal is not reached, none of those pledges will be received. My project is a great, grassroots concert involving a live concert recording, a unique opportunity to check a recording studio out and a chance to sponsor some bright, young music students. Here is the link! Best Wishes, Daniel
Other big news, is Truth & Consequence will be performing at Chris's Jazz Cafe, September 23rd, 7-10pm $$This will be my FIRST, performance as a leader here! Also all the new octet music will be performed for the first time.http://www.chrisjazzcafe.com/
After that concert, also on Sept. 23rd, I will be making a B-line, for a B-Movie, up to the World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut st., 11pm, $$to perform Agent Moosehead's soundtrack to "Attack of the Giant Leeches"http://www.worldcafelive.com/
Also, tomorrow, September 2nd, We will be celebrating 9 years of Bobby Zankel & The Warriors of The Wonderful Sound @ Tritone, 1508 South st, 9:30pmwww.tritonebar.comThe band started all those years ago during my second year of presenting The Collective Voices Festival, I had asked Bobby if there were any projects that would be different than what he was doing with his trio and he apparently only needed to be asked, because we have played first Thursday @ Tritone for 9 years! The great thing is how it keeps growing, new music, performances with Dave Liebman, Odean Pope, Marty Erhlich & Rudresh Mahanthapah. Next year we grow further welcoming Steve Coleman, and I promise BZ has even bigger dreams to fulfill beyond that.
A busy month, additionally my teaching schedule starts up with a couple of new wrinkles, a Friday Improv/Ensemble for older students @ Queen st. and a Sax Quartet and young persons jazz ensemble in West Philly. If you have any students who would like those classes they are very reasonable at Settlement, let me know!

07.24.10Special October Concert!
Hi, the ongoing Metamorphosis Concert Series is continuing at Moonstone Arts center in August & my first appearance as a leader at Chris's Jazz Cafe in September! But October will be the midway point of our concert year and a celebration is in order, so I've decided on a unique combination of reasons to party and hope you can come. On October 16th & 17th we will celebrate the midway point of the concert series (and my 37th B-day!) by doing 4 sets of recorded live performances at my friend Pete's Buckeye Recording Studio, these events will have a live audience and their attendance and donation will produce a limited edition live CD of the event and all the material Truth & Consequence has presented in the concert series so far. Attendance will be very limited for each event (about 30 guests), it will create a true Artist/Audience Cooperative and be a very important gift to me. For at least a $15 donation you will receive admittance and a CD. Hope everyone can come and support! Please contact me for more details directly.
07.06.10Metamorphosis Concert Series Receives Subito Grant
Truth & Consequence has been awarded a Subito Grant, which will be used to create special events within a year long, monthly concert series. Each quarter we will be presenting & performing new works, first as a quartet followed by 2 octet performances, the venues will be varied and chosen to create maximum audience accessibility. Through this process we expect a very public transformation to occur with the band growing and developing a larger repertoire and deeper group cohesion. Please attend!
